About Engine Replacement

Engine Replacement

Think You Might Be Experiencing Engine Issues With Your Vehicle?

FREED Performance Is Well-Equipped To Diagnose And Repair Engine Problems Today.

When Engine Replacement Becomes the Right Choice

Sometimes an engine is too far gone for a repair — and a full engine replacement is the smarter move.

An engine replacement is a significant investment, but in many cases it’s the most cost-effective way to keep a vehicle you love on the road. When repair costs approach or exceed the value of the engine itself — or when internal damage is too widespread to fix piece by piece — replacing the engine can restore your car to reliable, drivable condition without the cost of buying a whole new vehicle.

If you’re not sure whether your engine should be repaired or replaced, bring it in. We’ll diagnose the issue and walk you through your options before any work begins.

Signs Your Engine May Be Beyond Repair

These more serious symptoms often point to damage that calls for an engine replacement rather than a repair:

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, stop driving the vehicle and have it inspected before further damage occurs.

  • The engine will not start, even with a healthy battery and fuel system
  • Severe knocking, rod-knock, or metallic clattering from inside the engine
  • Coolant in the oil (milky-looking dipstick) or oil in the coolant
  • Loss of compression across multiple cylinders
  • A cracked or warped engine block or cylinder head
  • Catastrophic damage from a severe overheat or a snapped timing belt or chain
  • Hydrolock from water ingestion
  • The engine will no longer turn over by hand or on the starter (seized)

Engine Replacement Options

We help you weigh the trade-offs between cost, longevity, and availability when choosing a replacement engine:

  • Remanufactured engines. Built from a used core that’s been disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt with new wear components. Typically backed by a parts warranty from the rebuilder
  • Used engines. Lower-cost units pulled from a donor vehicle, with mileage and compression verified before installation. A good fit when the donor history is well documented
  • New OEM engines. Brand-new from the manufacturer when available. The most expensive option, and not offered for every model — but the closest you can get to factory-fresh
  • Performance engine swaps. For enthusiasts who want more capability than the factory engine offered. Plan ahead — these jobs often require supporting upgrades to the transmission, cooling, fuel, and engine management systems

European and Performance Engine Specialists

Engine replacement on a European or performance vehicle isn’t the same job as a domestic swap.

European cars — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, MINI, and Jaguar — use tightly integrated electronics, specialized engine mounting, and procedures that call for manufacturer-specific tools and know-how. FREED Performance specializes in these vehicles and brings the same dealer-level expertise to engine replacement that we bring to everyday service.

Whether you’re keeping a beloved daily driver on the road or upgrading a performance car with a more capable engine, we’ll help you source the right unit, install it correctly, and verify everything is dialed in before you pick the car up.

What to Expect During an Engine Replacement

Engine replacement is a multi-day job that involves careful diagnosis, sourcing, and installation:

  • Diagnosis and consultation. We confirm that replacement is the right call, walk you through your options, and provide a written estimate before any work begins
  • Sourcing your replacement engine. Remanufactured, used, new, or a performance unit — we source from suppliers we trust and inspect the engine before installation
  • Installation and integration. Our technicians remove the old engine, transfer over the accessories and components your replacement needs, install the new unit, and connect all electrical, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems
  • Testing and break-in. Once installed, we run the engine, check for leaks, verify timing and performance, and complete any required break-in procedures before returning the vehicle to you
