The Major Components of Your Vehicle’s AC System

Here are the key components that make up your car’s air conditioning system:

• Compressor. The most essential component of any air conditioning system. It pressurizes the refrigerant to cool the air, senses temperature changes, monitors and controls temperature output, and moves air to the condenser
• Condenser. Works to reduce the temperature and pressure of hot gasses coming from the refrigerant. Also responsible for moving the cooled liquid refrigerant to the receiver/dryer or accumulator
• Receiver/Dryer or Accumulator. Separates gas from liquid to protect the compressor, removes moisture using a desiccant, monitors and controls the amount of refrigerant going into the evaporator, and stores excess refrigerant
• Thermal Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube. Located between the condenser and evaporator, they monitor the pressure and temperature of your AC system and calculate the exact amount of refrigerant that can safely go into the evaporator
• Evaporator. Located right behind the dashboard, it’s in charge of cooling the air with the refrigerant before it is blown into the cabin of your vehicle
